Mit seinen kleinen Vorderflossen schwimmt der Nordatlantische Glattwal langsam durch das Meer. Mit seiner breiten, quer zum Körper stehenden Schwanzflosse hält er seinen großen Körper auf Kurs. Etwa 8 km/h ist er nur schnell. Er schwimmt langsam, denn während er durch das Wasser gleitet, filtert er durch seine Barten im Maul kleine Krebse und Fische, die er dann genüsslich verspeist. So eine Mahlzeit dauert bei ihm ziemlich lange. Da der Meeresriese bis zu 100 Tonnen auf die Waage bringt, ist sein Appetit auf Krebse ziemlich groß.
